Song Science #4: Mastering Modulation in Your Songwriting - Extended Edition

Bring energy and intrigue to your songs with multiple modulation techniques

   Watch Promo

Have you ever used one of the many types of modulation in your songs?

Modulation can bring energy, intrigue, and prosody to your songs.

Songwriters from Mariah Carey to Taylor Swift to The Beatles have successfully used these techniques!

What is Modulation?

Modulation, simply, is changing from one key to another key within a song.

For example, you can have a Chorus in the Key of E and then when you get to the Bridge you can modulate to the key of C.

How do you know where to Modulate?

Modulation distance is dependent on how similar keys are. In this course you'll learn how to modulate to close keys as well as far away keys.

Additionally there are multiple ways to modulate to another key. In this course you'll learn multiple techniques and be shown real examples of this happening.

Some of these techniques include:

  1. Relative Key Modulation
  2. Parallel Key Modulation
  3. Relative-Parallel Key Modulation
  4. Pivot Chord Modulation
  5. Altered Common Chord Modulation
  6. Common Tone Modulation
  7. Chromatic Mediant Modulation

And much more!

"Really good course. Modulation explained in a straight forward, logical fashion with good, well-known song examples. I will probably revise it several times to let it all sink in." - Ian D.

"This course goes through what can be a confusing and daunting subject, and breaks it down into clear and straightforward bite-sized chunks. Having taken this course I feel almost enlightened to a subject I have put off learning. I am now more comfortable using modulation in my songs. Highly recommended for anyone interested in taking their songwriting to the next level." - Marcus T.

"He is GREAT!!!! He connects the written symbol or code to the actual EXPERIENCE of music. I cannot praise his course enough." - Jeffrey W.

"A great course on modulation and changing key smoothly. Not only because there are not many courses about that topic, but also because it is very clearly explained, despite dealing with complex music theory concept." - Alain R.
